WWF Japan – Population by pixel is a project conducted in 2008 by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This project, which definitely hurts your eyes, aimed at raising awareness on the number of species going nearly extinct.

Population by pixel was initially created by the agency Hakuhodo C&D / Tokyo, specifically Nami Hoshino, Yoshiyuki Mikami, and designer Kazuhiro Mochizuki. The creativity behind the project resulted on outstanding impact and inspired others to continue the work.

Recently, JJSmooth44 made a follow-up project where animal extinction is powerfully symbolized. According to the author, every Pixels is one animal. The more pixelated the image, the closer it is to extinction. He claims that he did the project as part of a programming challenge in Python and that the statistics were taken from the Animal Planet list of endangered species. Below are a few of those photos. Sadly, not all of them can be seen.
