Thinking about it, it does sound like something from the Walking Dead, but there are multiple large (and pretty modern) cities around the world which have been deserted for various reasons.

Either Mother Nature, the economy, or a combination of the two has dwindled the population of these cities to nothing. From California to Japan, there are some amazing abandoned cities around the world you can actually visit for a vacation that’s out of the norm, and entirely awesome. Below you can find the largest”ghost cities” of the world:

1. Ordos Kangbashi, China, is the world’s largest ghost town

Ordos Kangbashi was built to be a modern city with state-of-the-art architecture, large stadiums, and gorgeous public spaces. The city achieved all that in just under 10 years, but it failed to attract people.

2.Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, a ghost town that’s known for its marble buildings.

Today, the city is largely a ghost town because of the country’s isolated culture, which Niyazov implemented. Turkmenistan is the seventh least visited country in the world.

3. Wittenoom, Australia, overrun by asbestos.

Amid growing health concerns, the declining demand for asbestos led to the mine closing in 1966 with most of the residents moving away to find other work, according to ABC.

4. Ruby, Arizona, an abandoned mining town.

Officially abandoned in 1940, the remains of Ruby now reside on private land, but it is open to the public for a small fee. It remains one of the best-preserved western towns in the US.

5. Varosha, Cyprus, once a popular tourist destination.

According to BBC, Varosha has remained abandoned and under the control of the Turkish Military since 1974. It has been fenced off, and nobody but military and UN personnel are allowed into the once beautiful tourist destination.
