Instagram launched almost a decade ago, in 2010. Feel old yet? I do! If you are on Instagram, you know that a growing number of celebrities, fitness gurus, fashion bloggers, interior designers, authors, and more have turned to the photo-centric social network and build a bussiness out of it.

Once established on Instagram, many of these users who have large numbers of followers branch out with branded content, product lines, podcasts or books. Basically, Instagram influencers are people who document their lives through beautiful photography and get paid by well-known brands to do it!

At the heart of this industry is a simple premise: people can turn their popularity into profit. Sometimes, a lot of profit. The most highly-paid influencers such as Kylie Jenner can make more than 1 million per Instagram post, according to one report.

How does it work?
They are called Instagram influencers because they have the power to influence an audience. And that audience is their Instagram followers! Once Instagram influencers have a decent number of followers (and we are talking 10k+) brands will send them products such as clothes, accessories, makeup etc. for free to advertise to their followers. Instagram influencers try on those products and put up photos or videos on Instagram, mention the name of the brand in the caption and share a number of Instagram stories about the product. Now they can get as creative as they want! They can give reviews of the product or simply lure their followers with catchy photos and videos. Brands will reach out to influences based on the number of their followers, likes, comments and type of content they post. There are even firms such as Viral Nation that connect companies with influencers for deals. According to the Financial Times, if you have an audience of 100,000 followers, you can charge brands2,700 USD per post. Influencers with four to 20 million followers typically make a cool 6,000 to17,500 USD every time they upload a sponsored post. But, even if you have fewer followers such as 30K and have a strong engagement rate you can earn up to $350 USD per post.
