NASA expects a massive asteroid to make a “close approach” to Earth on Boxing Day.
The beefy space rock measures as much as 2,034 feet (620 metres) in diameter, and is set to skim past Earth on December 26.

Asteroids regularly make close approaches to Earth, and Nasa creates alerts for each one of these objects.

Sometimes several will even pass by in a single day – completely unnoticed by humanity. For instance, four ‘All Saints’ asteroids skimmed past Earth on November 1, completely harmlessly. Now Nasa has revealed that another asteroid is scheduled for an Earth fly-by on December 26 – Boxing Day. And the closest it could pass to Earth is 4,530,666 miles (7,291,400km). That’s around 19 times farther than the Moon, so we’re pretty safe. But astronomically speaking, it’s very close – just one-twentieth of the distance between Earth and the Sun. Nasa expects the space rock to pass Earth at 7.54 am without incident.
